Pelaw Main Public School is located south of Kurri Kurri. The school has a generational history in developing the educational needs of families in the local community. Starting 2024, the school has a student population of 123, approximately 25% of our students are Aboriginal.
At Pelaw Main Public School all students are known, valued and cared for within a safe and respectful environment. Teachers, parents and students work in partnership to ensure a shared responsibility for growth and achievement. Through collaboration, we create an inclusive and positive culture where every student is challenged and supported to achieve their full potential, becoming successful life-long learners. Student voice is encouraged and fostered through an active School Representative Council (SRC) and Aboriginal Education Team (AET).
The school has seven classes and a teaching staff of fifteen, catering for children from Kindergarten to Year 6. The school’s Family Occupational and Education Index has levelled at 137 in 2022. Based on this, the school receives funding through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM) for Socio–economic background, Aboriginal equity and low level adjustments for Disability.
A number of specialist teachers, support staff and students’ learning. The students are also supported by several School Learning Support Officers (SLSOs), who work with students with additional learning needs. The school also has a full–time School Administration Manager and part -time School Administration Officers.
Our Positive Behaviour for Learning expectations are Respectful, Safe, and Active Learners. Emphasis is on quality teaching and learning, enhancing student achievement and learning outcomes, with a strong commitment to student engagement and attendance. The school promotes a caring and supportive environment, providing programs that cater for students of all abilities and backgrounds. Our school culture is strongly focused on learning, the building of educational aspirations and ongoing performance improvement throughout the school community. Current teaching staff have undertaken professional learning in Trauma Informed Practices with the Berry Street Education Model.
